Booster Set 12: Binding Force of the Black Rings will be released in English onFebruary 21st 2014. This set was released in Japan July 6th, 2013.
This new booster set includes 102 cards. This is what the breakdown of cards looks like for this set:
|Clan||Total cards in this set|
This set primarily introduces the new clan Link Jokers. This set also supports Dark Irregulars and Pale Moons. These 2 clans truly benefit from this new set.
There is a new type of phenomenon in this set: locking your opponent’s cards. Locking states:
The locked card is turned face down, and cannot do anything. It turns face up at the end of the owner’s turn.
This is useful to stop your opponent from intercepting but it is mainly used to satisfy the condition of many abilities. I will explain soon.
Let’s start with one of the best cards in this set. Star-vader, Nebula Lord Dragon.
[CONT](VC) Limit Break 4. During your turn, all of your front row «Link Joker» get [Power]+3000 for each of your opponent’s locked cards.
[ACT](VC):[Counter Blast (2)] Choose one of your opponent’s rear-guards in the back row, and lock it.
We can see how the second effect benefits the first one. That first ability alone is extremely powerful. Did I mention that this card alone has 11k? This card’s first ability almost guarantees that all of your front row cards will be hitting those magic numbers and you will not worry about intercepts or special 10k intercept cards.
Shadow Paladins get a really good boost with a card named Revenger, Raging Form Dragon.
Revenger, Raging Form Dragon is a Shadow Paladin Archetype. This card’s main ability states:
[AUTO](VC) Limit Break 4:[Choose three of your rear-guards with “Revenger” in its card name, and retire them] At the end of the battle that this unit attacked, you may pay the cost. If you do, choose up to one card named “Revenger, Raging Form Dragon” from your hand, ride it as [Stand], choose your vanguard, and that unit gets [Power]+10000 until end of turn.
You have to watch out for Kagero and Narukami when you play this card because they will naturally destroy your Rear-guards, but versus any other clan, this card is a good way to go about winning. It allows you to attack twice with a vanguard and it replenishes your hand because of the drive checks.
There is another Garmore-type card of Gold Paladins called Wolf Fang Liberator, Garmore. Not very impressed with this card but it is one of the RRR in this set.
They added a REVERSE phenomenon in this set. According to cardfight.wikia.com, reverse is:
Reverse is a phenomenon created by Void, in which a cardfighter loses his/her soul, and his/her energy becomes Void’s. If a Reverse fighter challenges a cardfighter to a cardfight and they win, the cardfighter whom lost will also become Reversed.
This is obviously for the television show but I felt like it was worth a mention. As for the card game, cardfight.wikia.com states
They all have a striking mutual feature in their artwork, they all hold the black rings, this is to signify their corruption by Link Joker. Also, the letter Я has a distinct red outline that all the other characters do not have.
So far, they are the only non-Link Joker units to be able to lock. Contrasting from Link Joker’s ability to lock their opponent’s rear-guards, “Reverse” units locks their own rear-guards to gain huge advantages.
These reverse cards are really cool. Notice the really neat red and black bold written for the word REVERSE. The reverse cards that stand out the most are Demon Marquis, Amon REVERSE and Silver Thorn Dragon Queen, Luquier “Reverse”. Both of these cards get an extra 2000 boost when they have a copy of themselves in the soul and they both have the ability to lock one of their own cards to gain power and/or critical.
In conclusion, Binding Force of the Black Rings is pretty good. It introduced the english players the Link Jokers which we will be seeing in tournaments very soon! This set also boosted old clans and newer clans so it is a nice balance between the old and the new.
